NAVIGARE NECESSE EST, VIVERE NON...

Brest 2008

The International
Maritime Festival, 11th to 17th July

About the Brest 2008 festival

This international festival of sailors and the sea takes in almost 2,000 boats, from professional to amateur and traditional to modern, and 15,000 sailors from 30
countries.
Sailboats cast off each day to enjoy the exhilaration of sailing and racing, but there are also spontaneous nautical activities that take place within the harbour shelter to the delight of quayside spectators, whilst firework displays, naval parades and other attractions provide great entertainment throughout the week.

Croatia Village

In Croatia, the movement to revive the maritime heritage appeared a few years after the end of the war in the former Yugoslavia thanks to sailors and passionate historians like Josko Bozanic,Velimir Salamon and Vladimir Skracic. The launch in December 1997 on the Isle of Vis of "Comeza-Lisboa", was much more than media hype, as it offered one of the first positive images of Croatia since the war. In 10 years, a great flotilla of "falkusa" (the equivalent of our old sailing vessels) has been built up in harbours all along the Adriatic coast with the support of local authorities. It goes without saying that the presence at BREST 2008 has given new impetus to these projects " Dobrodošli u Hrvatsku !"

The flottilla

A dozen genuine traditional vessels (with 45 sailors altogether) will be representing the maritime heritage of Croatia:
The gajeta falkusa “Comeza-Lisboa” (9 m), the only boat flying the Coatian flag in 2004
The gajeta falkusa “Molo” (5 m ), te result of the educational project of a “baby-boat” sponsored by UNESCO
The gajeta from Betina, “Kurnatarica”, a replica (7 m), which will be used by the sailing school belonging to the association of Lateen sails from the Isle of Murter
The Bracera, “Gospa Od Mora”, a 9m replica launched at Easter 2008 in Dubrovnik
The Condura Croatica, from Zadar (8 m), replica of an old 12th Century fighting ship
The Batana “Fiamita” from Rovinj, replica of a fishing bark from Istria
The Ladja, a traditional riverboat from the Neretva
The Leut “Slobodna Dalmacija” (10 m) an authentic Dalmatian fishing boat from the 19th Century from Korcula (around 1894), which has been completely rebuilt.
The Gajeta from Hvar “Mociguzica” (6.50 m)
A replica of the “Liburna” (9 m) from Rijeka
The Viski Guc (or “half-nut”) “Pol Oriha”, a 3m cockleshell, which will nevertheless be the only boat to sail to Brest after a long experimental voyage on the canals of Europe.
The twelfth, a “falkusa” from Zadar, currently being restored is due to be on display on the quay, where the shipwright’s work will be finished in front of the visitors…

The convoy will come by road (Split-Brest = 2480 km) and the gathering of the whole flotilla on trucks will give rise to a major festival at the start in the ancient port of Split.

The Village

Set up opposite the flotilla on the Eastern Quay in the 3rd Basin, on a surface area of more than 1000 m2, it will be presenting a permanent programme of events and demonstrations. In particular, the village includes six reconstructions of Dalmatian cottages, housing exhibitions on traditional boats, but also the Croatian Wine Bar and the House of Adriatic Flavours.

Other houses will be dedicated to maritime and craft workshops:
Shipwrights’ yard
Workshop on small boat fishing, rope workshop
Pottery, weaving and basket-making stalls

The restaurant

Run by Vinco Bogdanovich, who is originally from Komiza and who has lived in France for fifteen years, the restaurant will be serving specialities from Dalmatian cookery (marinated sardines, grilled squid, spicy fig cakes, carob liqueur, etc).

Music and shows

In all, 75 musicians, singers and dancers will be putting on a permanent musical show from 11 in the morning until nightfall.
The programming will move between the top groups and artists representing Croatian music. In the evening, traditional music groups will extend their performances to include a festive atmosphere to make you want to dance.
The "Jedinstvo" group (the only professional folk group in Croatia)
Tamara Obrovac - (the Croatian star of jazz-fusion)
The Quintet "Via Dalmacia"
The Quintet "Marinero"
Tovareca muzika ("Donkey Music") a group from the islands of Dugi Otok, who play music by blowing in ox horns.
To finish, the "Ala Falka" show (marionettes and theatre on the theme of boat building) will be giving three performances a day to please kids and their parents alike.
